What is Network Spinal?
In our last blog post we talked about different strategies to help balance and regulate your Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). If you haven’t had a chance to read that article check it out.
In this post, we will be going over what Network Spinal is, how it’s unique, and why it could be one of the missing pieces to your health and wellness.
Network Spinal is a chiropractic approach that focuses on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. It is a gentle, hands-on approach that uses light, specific contacts along the spine to release tension and improve communication between the brain and the body.
Network Spinal was developed by Dr. Donny Epstein in the 1980s, originally called Network Chiropractic. It was founded on the principle that there is an organizing wisdom or intelligence in all matter, and that within humans this intelligence expresses through the spine and Nervous System. One of the key points that makes this approach unique to other traditional forms of chiropractic is that it doesn’t look at the spine as just a collection of bones, but as a communication system that transmits information throughout the body. When the spine is misaligned, it can interfere with this communication, leading to not only physical symptoms, but emotional and chemical disturbances as well. This paradigm makes Network Spinal a truly holistic approach, as it addresses the whole person, rather than just the symptom or condition they are presenting.
Network Spinal is one of the most highly researched techniques in the chiropractic field. Neurobiologists at the Medical College at the University of California, Irvine studied almost 3,000 participants receiving Network Spinal (called NSA at the time). The study found statistically significant improvements across almost 100 areas of quality of life. This included things physical, but also mental, emotional, and particularly how they dealt with stress.
Here are a few things you can expect when you visit a Network Spinal practitioner:
Light pressure applied to specific points on the spine
Gentle rocking or swaying movements of the spine
Verbal cues or suggestion
It is normal to not feel much during the first few sessions. However as you spend more time in care, you begin to become more sensitized to your body, and the effects of care become more profound. Remember that the goal is to retrain patterns in the nervous system to release tension and improve spinal alignment by strengthening the communication between the brain and body.
Network Spinal has been known to improve various aspects of a persons well-being including:
Feeling more energized
Sleep
Focus and Attention
Posture
More adaptive to Stress
Flexibility
Various types of physical pain; headaches, neck and back pain, joint pain, etc.
Healthier relationship with self and others
Ability to be more present and in the moment
These are just to name a few, for a more complete list check out the link to the research study listed above. It’s important to remember that Network Spinal is not a treatment for any condition or symptom. It addresses the dis-ease or stress in the spine, and that allows the body to function more optimally.
